Unexpected Adventure

Are you seeking security or adventure?

How ironic! This is my first post in a series about books and reading. The first book I planned to talk about is The Hobbit! A hobbit is a perfect example of the struggle between security and adventure.

My favorite thing about the story of Bilbo Baggins is that he wasn’t looking for an adventure when the dwarfs and Gandalf arrived at his doorstep, however he didn’t refuse to go. He went along doubting his abilities as an adventurer. Eventually he began to behave like a brave explorer even if he didn’t believe he was one. All the while longing for the security of his home under the hill.

I tend to lean into security, but long for adventures. I guess that’s why I love Tolkien’s stories. Hobbits and I share this longing of the safety of home and excitement of adventure. Lucky for me, I find adventure in reading.

Have you read The Hobbit? You should.

P.S. The copy of The Hobbit pictured is the same copy I’ve had since childhood published in 1975
