Book Fact: Americans are not on Top

Book fact #12 Iceland tops the world in per capita book publishing.

The claim that Iceland tops the world in per capita book reading is true, supported by its high rates of book publication and consumption, a strong literary tradition rooted in sagas and poetry, and a culture where reading is a celebrated pastime. A 2022 survey showed Icelanders read an average of 2.4 books per month, and almost a third read daily.

In contrast Americans read an average of 1 book per month and some less than that with an average of 8 per year. This statistic makes this American librarian’s heart sad.

Go to the library, get a book, read it and return it! It’s the one thing that is still free in this life.

Love & Light, Lori
